It's one of the most common questions we hear at Technico: how often should I actually get my machine serviced?
The honest answer depends on how much you use it. But the more important point is this — most espresso machine problems don't happen suddenly. They build slowly, usually because maintenance got pushed back a few months, then a few more. By the time something fails, the damage has often been accumulating for a long time.
Here's a practical guide to service intervals based on how your machine gets used.
Home espresso machines
If you're pulling one or two shots a day at home, a professional service every 12 months is the right baseline. At this usage level, the machine isn't under significant mechanical stress, but internal components — group seals, gaskets, solenoid valves — still degrade over time regardless of how often the machine runs.
At each annual service a technician should inspect and replace worn seals and gaskets, check the pump pressure and boiler, clean the group head and shower screen thoroughly, and assess your water quality and filtration.
If you're in Adelaide and using unfiltered tap water, you may need more frequent attention — Adelaide water runs around 90–130mg/L calcium carbonate hardness, which is at or above the upper limit recommended for espresso machines. Scale builds up faster than most home baristas realise.
Café and commercial machines — moderate volume
For cafés pulling up to around 150–200 shots per day, a professional service every 6 months is standard. At this level of use, group seals, o-rings, and shower screens wear down at a meaningful rate, and water filters need regular replacement to protect the boiler.
A six-monthly service should include full gasket and seal replacement, backflush and deep group clean, boiler inspection, descale if needed, pump pressure calibration, and water filter replacement.
High-volume commercial machines
Busy cafés running 300+ shots per day should be looking at a service every 3 months. At this level of throughput the machine is under sustained pressure and heat for hours at a time. Seals degrade faster, scale accumulates more quickly, and small issues can turn into expensive repairs within weeks if left unchecked.
For high-volume operations, downtime during a service is far less costly than downtime from an emergency repair — particularly if it happens on a Saturday morning.
The signs your machine is overdue
Regardless of how long it's been since the last service, some warning signs mean you should book a technician sooner rather than later:
- Shots running faster or slower than usual without any grind or dose change
- Temperature instability — shots tasting different throughout the day
- Steam pressure dropping or the steam wand performing inconsistently
- Any visible water around the group head, boiler, or fittings
- Unusual sounds — a struggling pump or rattling internals
- Scale visible on external surfaces like the steam wand tip
Any of these warrant a call. In our experience, the cost of addressing an issue early is almost always a fraction of the cost of the repair it eventually becomes if ignored.
What about daily and weekly cleaning?
Professional servicing is separate from your daily maintenance routine. Daily backflushing, wiping down steam wands immediately after use, and keeping group heads clean are all essential — but they don't replace the internal work a technician does. Daily cleaning maintains coffee quality and hygiene. Professional servicing addresses mechanical wear that cleaning can't touch.
A note on water
Water quality has a bigger impact on service frequency than most people realise. Two cafés running identical machines can have very different maintenance needs based purely on their water supply. Proper filtration — particularly a BWT Reverse Osmosis for plumbed machines — can meaningfully extend the intervals between descaling and reduce the wear rate on boiler components. It's one of the most cost-effective investments you can make in your equipment.
If you're not sure what filtration setup suits your machine and your Adelaide water supply, we're happy to advise.
